Canine arthritis otherwise known as osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease (DJD) is one of the most common health issues faced by dogs. One in every five dogs usually suffers from arthritis. Just like we humans, dogs do get arthritis for many reasons mostly affecting middle-aged to older dogs. And, influenced by other health issues like Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, or Luxating Patella which can grow into arthritis in later stages, and even obesity and fracture of the joint can cause it. This disease also commonly occurs in larger breeds of dogs and breeds that have mixed. 

And symptoms of canine arthritis include stiffness, limping, narrowing of the hip and back end, lethargy, swallow joints, trouble walking or climbing, and behavioral changes. Although this disease can’t be cured completely, there are some ways that can be helpful for your furry friend to remain healthy and lessen the pain associated with arthritis with medication, remedies, and even surgeries.

Medications like Anti-inflammatory such as NSAIDs can give to your dog to help with their symptoms. And some other pain relief medicine that can be seen as effective to the dog. Apart from that, a vet can suggest joint supplements that can help in the treatment process. And even a vet might suggest for weight loss program if your dog is overweight or obese.



Other Remedies for Canine Arthritis

Some pet owners like to prefer a natural method to treat their dogs. Therapies like massage, physical therapy, hydrotherapy, or acupuncture were found helpful for dogs suffering from arthritis. Perhaps these therapies are best for dogs, but one must consult their vet before to ensure the health of the dog. Give them a proper diet and vitamin supplements to help their immune system to be strong and healthy along with exercise to keep them in good shape.

Surgery for Canine Arthritis

If the pain seems uncontrollable and medication doesn’t help, then the last resort is to opt-out of surgery for the specified arthritis problem. For instance, hip replacement surgery might be recommended if the hip is badly deformed or even joint surgeries such as fusion (arthrodesis) can be considered to help your dog from pain and suffering. This kind of surgery needs a long time of recovery period and it is done in specialist veterinary hospitals or clinics.
